How do I connect my surround sound system to my computer (software wise)?

I have connected my surround sound system to my computer via the optical port from my integrated sound card and it is playing, but only in stereo, even when the application eg. game (5.1) or DVD (5.1), is in 5.1. Is there some kind of software which I need to encode the 5.1?

   The functions like volume and then adjust the computer youll have to their appropriate places on the cords to.
