What computer software can I use for animation?

I’m interested in computer animation and I was wondering if there’s a program you can download for computer animation? (I use windows XP) I don’t mind anything small like 2-D or anything since I’m just a beginner ^.^ I mainly want to know how to get images to move, and the sound effects. Please help me? Tyvm!
